Frequently Asked Questions
- Do you provide Life Jackets?
Yes, The School of Yak use within our fleet and sell Burke E50 Kayak PFD’s in our store. We have a range of sizes from extra small to extra large on the kayak trailer. Every paddler must wear a PFD at all times when on the water in a School of Yak event.
- What do I wear?
School of Yak actively practises sun smart paddling, the water can be a place of high sun exposure. Please use Sun block and wear “Sun Safe” clothing. We recommend the use of synthetics as they dry faster than cotton. Long sleeves are best, neoprene gloves are great if you have them. If you have lightweight spray/wind jacket bring it along. Shorts or swimmers in summer are fine on the bottom half because you are inside the cockpit.
- Can I wear Jeans?
Absolutely NO they are not suitable kayaking attire
- What about my feet?
We recommend you wear neoprene water shoes if you have them, they are the recognised footwear for paddlers. If you don’t have them a pair of light weight old joggers or volley’s are ok. It is very important to have your laces well concealed or even taped as they can cause entrapment in an emergency if they are left hanging loose.
- Do I need to wear a hat?
Yes, we cannot stress this strongly enough. A hat with a way of tying it to your person is even better. If you are holidaying and don’t have a hat for some reason please ask to borrow one of ours.
- Do I need to bring anything?
You will need a filled Water Bottle for every activity. Dehydration on the water is a problem. If you are doing a short tour or lesson then please bring snacks to put in your life PFD. Our main half day and full-day tours have food provided
- Can I use my own kayak?
Yes that’s no problem at all provided it meets our safety standards. A School of Yak staff member will inspect it before a final OK is given.
